Columbus, OH, January 16, 2018 – Columbus Gives Back (CGB) announced that its 1,000th volunteer event took place at the Ronald McDonald House on December 19, 2017. To celebrate this milestone and recognize some of the organization’s partners from 2017, CGB will host a special happy hour at Seventh Son Brewing on Wednesday, January 24 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
According to Columbus Gives Back President Amanda Shafer, “Reaching 1,000 events is an in-credible milestone for Columbus Gives Back. We want to encourage everyone to attend our happy hour at Seventh Son and be a part of our next 1,000 events. Everyone who volunteers with CGB is making a difference – one volunteer event and one social twist at a time.”
Service with a Social Twist
The Columbus-based volunteer organization provides opportunities for young professionals to volunteer and socialize with other service-minded individuals. By providing flexible volunteer opportunities in the evenings and weekends, CGB caters to generous locals with busy schedules.
According to Columbus Gives Back Director of Engagement Alfred Yates, “Columbus Gives Back realizes that many young professionals want to volunteer and meet new people, but their schedules may not allow them to commit to an ongoing volunteer opportunity. With CGB, people have the option to volunteer for events that work with their busy schedules.”
Columbus Gives Back Founder Juliana Hardymon was inspired to start CGB after making a New Year’s resolution to start volunteering again. After college she struggled to find time to volunteer as a young professional, and she realized that others had the same problem. She also discovered that many people like herself were interested in meeting new people, so she started CGB.
After advertising the first event on Craigslist, 10 volunteers arrived at the Unverferth House to cook spaghetti for the families staying there. The group then headed to Hamptons on King for the first social twist. The group grew organically and quickly after the first event. “The growth of CGB did not come without challenges, but I’m thrilled with where we’ve ended up and even more excited about where we’re going,” Hardymon said.
